CANNP awarded a Research Grant for the first time at the 2004 conference. The recipient was Carmen Dooley from MUSC.
The research grant is awarded to an active member of CANNP who is engaged in a research project. The project must be IRB approved prior to applying for the grant.

Carmen offered the following update about the research that she won the grant for. :
Five NNPs at MUSC were involved in the development and implementation of a research study on secondary surfactant deficiency and are listed as co investigators. These NNPs
are:

  • Cheryl Carson
  • Robin Bissinger
  • Mary Kay Colliton
  • Margaret Conway-Orgel
  • Carmen Dooley.
  • The primary investigator and mentor is Dr. Doe Eichler.

With Dr. Eicher’s assistance, the five NNPs created the research design, applied for and obtained IRB approval and implemented the study. These five NNPs obtained consent from parents for the study as well. The entire NNP team at MUSC was involved in the implementation of the study. Patients had to be screened, data was collected and infants were dosed when surfactant was indicated. The entire NNP team took responsibility for this.

In the study, we gave surfactant to infants who were over 7 days of life and had a qualifying respiratory decompensation. Infants received two doses of surfactant 12 hours apart. The data is currently being analyzed.

Dr. Eicher will be speaking about secondary surfactant deficiency and the preliminary results of the study at the annual neonatal pharmacology conference offered through MUSC and the CON in Charleston. This year's conference dates are Nov. 14-16.
